In a landscape marked by economic challenges and seasonal fluctuations, South Africa's job market continues to evolve. CareerJunction, a prominent jobs portal, recently unveiled its Employment Insights report for . This comprehensive analysis sheds light on the changing dynamics of the South African job market and highlights the skills in demand. The report is based on data sourced from Saongroup South Africa, encompassing the inputs of around 5,000 top recruiters.

Recruitment Activity Trends

April 2023 presented a 1% dip in recruitment activity, adding pressure to an already constrained job market. The decline was partly attributed to a series of public and school holidays during the month. However, a more concerning aspect is that hiring activity in April 2023 was 7% lower than the same period the previous year, indicating more profound issues at play beyond seasonal factors.

Significant month-on-month decreases were observed in the Finance, Business & Management, and IT sectors, reflecting recent changes. Fortunately, when viewed over a three-month span, there hasn't been a significant drop in hiring activity across any specific industry, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the challenges.

Emerging Trends in Job Skills

Despite the challenges, some sectors have experienced an uptick in hiring activity. The building and construction sector witnessed a remarkable 40% increase in job opportunities, with roles such as building project management and quantity surveying being highly sought after. In the sales sector, opportunities surged by 21%, emphasizing the demand for roles related to retail, account management, and sales consulting. Meanwhile, the admin, office, and support sector saw an 18% increase in hiring, with roles like personal assistant, client/customer support, and human resources being particularly sought after.

Supply Side Insights

On the supply side, CareerJunction observed a significant influx of candidates looking for positions in manufacturing and assembly, design and media, and building and construction fields. These trends indicate that job seekers are adapting to the changing market needs and are seeking opportunities in sectors with increased demand.

Regional Employment Opportunities

Regionally, Gauteng remains a hub for employment opportunities, accounting for 52% of all open positions in the country. It is followed by the Western Cape at 22% and KwaZulu Natal at 10%. The growth in hiring activity in KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, and Gauteng for admin, office, and support roles is particularly noteworthy when comparing data from February, March, and April 2023 to the same period in the previous year. The finance sector has also witnessed an increase in job opportunities in these regions over the past year.

Salaries for In-Demand Professions

CareerJunction's report highlights the three most in-demand professions in South Africa and the corresponding salary bands:

  1. Software Developer: This profession tops the list with salary offerings ranging from R33,547 to R64,396 per month, depending on the location. Key skills include SQL, .Net, C#, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Java, Asp.Net, PHP, MVC, and Angular.

  2. Sales Representative: The second most in-demand role offers earnings between R18,131 and R25,394 per month, with location as a determining factor. Key skills include sales, communication, customer services, admin, computer, marketing, leadership, time management, planning, negotiation, and presentation.

  3. Financial Accounting: In the third spot, this profession offers salaries between R29,039 and R40,754 per month, varying by location. Key skills include accounting, Pastel, MS Office, Sage, SAP, taxation, communication, financial reporting, caseware, reconciliations, attention to detail, and accpac.
